On Tuesday (5 Sep), Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the Indian team for the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 in a press conference held in Mumbai.
Rohit Sharma will lead India in the 2023 ODI World Cup, with all-rounder Hardik Pandya being named as his deputy for the marquee quadrilateral event. KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, who returned to the India team after a long injury layoff.
India’s core team include the likes of Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav, as they aim to win their second ODI World cup on home soil. It is to be noted down that India’s last ODI World Cup victory was in 2011, under the captaincy of M.S. Dhoni.
Meanwhile, Sanju Samson, Prasidh Krishna and Tilak Verma and Shikhar Dhawan did not make it to the squad of 15 either. Another surprising omission from the Indian team was of Yuzvendra Chahal and R Ashwin, who are replaced by Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav, whereas Rishabh Pant is still coming out of injury is injured Meanwhile, different reactions have come from the ex-cricketers, former Indian player Krishnamachari Srikkanth, said that “Shardul is neither an extraordinary batter nor extraordinary bowler,”

The deadline for the submission of a team squad to ICC is September 5, but the teams can make changes to their squad till September 28 without needing approval from the ICC.
India will play their first World Cup game against Australia on 8th September in M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, Bangalore, where defending champions England will take on New Zealand in Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on 5th September.
