Manchester derby ends in goalless draw at Old Trafford

Manchester United and Manchester City battled to a goalless draw on Sunday in the second leg of their iconic Premier League derby at Old Trafford.

The draw saw the host remaining in 13th place with 38 points from 31 matches, whereas Man City remains in fifth place with 52 points from 31 matches and is one point away from entering the top four. Both teams played a draw for the first time since December 12, 2020.

The hosts (Manchester United ) were likelier of the two to score, as represented by their xG totals (0.92 to 0.49) but were forced to hit primarily on the counter-attack and were unable to convert the chances into goals, whereas the visitors were caught in the same situation with the Egyptian footballer Omar Marmoush unable to beat the United goalkeeper. This game was also special for Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, as it was his last derby after announcing his departure as a six-time Premier League winner.

The only first-half chance of note fell to United footballer Alejandro Garnacho, who could not make his mind up in the opposition half. Andre Onana, on the other hand, was not much busy in the first half but was busier in the second half.

With seven games left, Pep Guardiola’s side will next play Crystal Palace on April 12th, whereas Manchester United will take on Lyon in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals on Saturday.
